5 Ways to Make Reading More Enjoyable for Your Kids

Helping your kids to learn how to read is no walk in the park. It’s normal that each child will learn how to read at different times, and some won’t enjoy the process at all. Creating way that make reading more exciting is a great way to motivate those who seem to struggle.

Reading with our kids and having them learn to read to us is something that we have to make a conscious effort to do. It is a great way to wind down for the night… if that is, it is being enjoyed. With a few simple tips and tricks I have recently picked up reading time has transformed into a much more enjoyable activity.

If reading becomes exciting for our son, whether it is the place that it takes place, how it begins or what we are reading about, we areoff to a good start. This year I wanted to make a goal to find new ways to have him read to us that might change his attitude around learning to read. For those that might also have a harder time creating a positive experience around teaching your kids to read you might also find these strategies to be helpful.5 Ways to Make Reading More Enjoyable for Your Kids

How to Make Reading More Enjoyable for Your Kids

1. Create a Reading Space // Do you have a special  place that you read to your kids or have them read to you? My sister gave me this idea when she set up a play tent at her house with faux fur and pillows and called it their reading nook. Her kids will grab a book and have time to themselves going through the pages and enjoying their quite reading time in their fun relaxing area.

2. Wrap Them Up // This is something that we have done at Christmas time leading up until Christmas. I had the idea from a friend to wrap up all of our Christmas books and then each day before Christmas open up a new book. Why not do this for books that your kids are learning to read. It adds a bit of mystery and anticipation for when they are opening up the ‘gift’ and they become more excited to dive in.

3. Read Together // Some days it’s a bit harder to get your kids motivated to start reading. It can be easy to get frustrated, but it is important to remember to stay positive and encouraging. It is ok to help out and even take turns reading. It might be a good idea to choose a longer book and then take turns reading page by page or paragraph by paragraph. If you can see that your child is having a harder time getting through the book of choice, maybe offer in this suggestion to encourage to not give up and keep going.

4. Include the Siblings // When both of the kids are eager to sit down to read it has worked out well to have our oldest read some books to our younger one. Even though the books are often easy to read books and don’t challenge our oldest it is still so rewarding and boosts his confidence. Being able to be in a teacher role adds a new level of excitement and allows for a new dynamic during reading time.

5. Join a Monthly Book Club // Recently we have had the opportunity to try out Lillypost, a monthly book subscription company. Each month a new package arrives with a handful of new books (different options for different age groups). The books that came in last month’s box were such a hit and instantly added excitement towards reading when the books arrived.

Lillypost individually wraps up each book inside their branded box making is feel like your child’s birthday every month when the package arrives. This month we have spent a lot of time reading our new Lillypost books and each one is a new favorite. If you are having a hard time with getting your child excited about reading to you or just reading time in general this is a super easy way to add some excitement.

Just for my readers Lillypost is offering and exclusive coupon code. Try out their monthly service with the code CWANDJW for 10% off any 3 month, 6 month or 12 month subscription. Insert the code at checkout.

Often times I find that when something begins to be difficult and you don’t feel like you are getting anywhere as a parent we need to start looking at things in another light. I would love to hear some tips or tricks that you might have for creating exciting and rewarding reading lessons in your home. Share in the comments below.

  • “When’s the last time you did something for the first time?” Those were words spoken to our group before starting our Tough Mudder course this past weekend in Whistler. Holy moly guys, I was nervous getting started on that course. Let’s just say... nervous shits are real 😅😂🙊 but that’s what makes it so great. Doing something that literally scares the shit outta you. We all pushed through, all 16km and 25 obstacles and it was FUN, hard but really freaking fun. Even though I’m hobbling around today, dang foot cramp (and literally sore all over) I’m so pumped on doing something new, pushing myself and having such an amazing group of friends tackle it together.

PS our men of tough mudder not pictured but SO equally appreciated.

  • Looking at the calendar like.... it can't actually be Father's Day this week can it? For anyone still looking for a gift, I have a deal to share! @sodastreamcanada currently has a bundle promotion running on their website until June 16th where you can save $20 when you bundle a FIZZI (your choice of colour), Soda Press Co. Pink Grapefruit flavour and the 'Love Your Planet' Bottle. For everything our Dads do for us, the least we can do is get them a gift we know they’ll love. See direct link in my stories for promotion details!
.
I also created a super yummy drink for you all to try. Inspired by Father's Day, I put together a mixed drink using my SodaStream FIZZI + their Pink Grapefruit Soda Press Co. flavour to create a Pink Grapefruit and Gin Cocktail (or mocktail) recipe. Here's how to make it:

Ingredients:

Flavoured sparkling water using 2 tbsp of the Pink Grapefruit Soda Press Co. flavour by @sodastreamcanada
1 ounce gin (optional)
Sliced grapefruit
Rosemary Sprigs

Directions:

Use your SodaStream to turn regular tap water into sparkling water in just a few seconds. Once carbonated, add 2 tbsp of SodaStream’s Pink Grapefruit Soda Press Co. flavour to sparkling water and mix. Fill glass to the top with ice. Pour in gin (optional), then fill glass with Pink Grapefruit flavoured sparkling water. Enjoy!
