Kitty Cat Black & White Themed Birthday Party

Styled Parties

Three Years Old. More then that even because it has already been past her birthday for over a month, even though it only seems like that was last week and her second birthday was a couple months ago…. I really do have to keep reminding myself, I have a Three. Year. Old! This year we decided to celebrate with a Kitty Cat Black and White Themed Birthday Party, keep it simpler and have so much fun!

Ever since her second birthday and I went from “I am not going to plan anything big,” to “Ok, so I really want to plan a unicorn party, but it will still be low key,” to “Since I am going to be having an awesome theme, why would I not go all out?”

Sophie’s Second Birthday Unicorn Party came and yes, I went all out. It was so fun and I realized then how much I love planning parties. Imaging the theme and seeing it come to life is so rewarding to me. Not to mention the look on the guest of honor’s face when they are surprised with the set up just for them.

Throughout the year I saw Sophie’s love for kitty cat’s bloom and I just knew that it was going to be the cutest theme for her next birthday party.

So yes, I know it might be a little over the top for a three year old, but you know what, everyone had an awesome time and that is what matters to me most!

Keeping with to theme and being very minimalistic with the design was so key in pulling off our overall look. I had a number of people say I out did myself, but the thing was, it was really one of the simplest parties I have planned. The invitations were the first item to be designed and I had the opportunity to work with the Tiny Prints team to take one of their black and white invitation designs and tweak it a bit to make it our own. The polka dot invitation liners introduced some pattern to the black and white theme and we were able to play off that for the rest of the party.

The backdrop was made of black poster board that I cut and hot glue gunned onto twine. I created the shapes one and then traced the original shape to make many more duplicates. Believe it or not this was one of the most time consuming tasks for the party but it was well worth it as it pulled the entire table together.

Let’s start with that cake! My mom is a retired cake decorator and when I asked her about making a kitty cat cake she was up for the challenge (I don’t actually think it was a challenge for her). This cake was three layer with alternating vanilla and chocolate layers, so not only was it ridiculously cute it was also deliciously tasty. Next to the cake were the perfectly designed cookie pops, put together by my friend, The Cake Mama (DIY Cookie Pops Post by The Cake Mama).

The cookie pops stood tall in the black rectangular boxes, that you might be surprised are actually those green foam boards for flower arrangements. I picked these up from my local dollar store, spray painted them black and then hot glue gunned the polka dot ribbon.

I hope you didn’t think I forgot to mention these incredible treats that lined the front row. Two of my go to party snacks; popcorn and marshmallows. I think every party I have hosted in the part year I have included some of Marsh & Mallow’s delicious custom mallows (Check out the gold ones she did for our Summer Soiree). When I told Carly, founder of Marsh and Mallow, what the theme of our party was I gave her full reign to create something she felt would work. I was beyond impressed with the black and white custom mallows. The white sprinkles on top went perfectly with the polka dot highlights.

Popcorn is not only one of my favorite snacks but my kids love it too! I have found that it makes the perfect party snack as well for kids and adults. This mix is made to match and contains white chocolate and oreo cookies, now that might sound strange but don’t judge it ’til you try it. The Popcorn Bar can pretty much whip up any magical creation to go alongside your party theme.

I created cat faced plates to bring together the theme on the table. With one pipe cleaner for each side of whiskers and black construction paper for the ears these plates were so easy to put together. Fold the whiskers equally into thirds and then snip the folds. With a hot glue gun attach the ears and the whiskers to the back of the plate.

My partyware was picked up from a local party shop, Heather and Gem. Topped off with these ever so popular party noise makers from Fun Fiestas by Ili and the table arrangement was simple and sweet. My last DIY for the black and white themed birthday party was these Kitty Cat ears. The kids loved them (well most of the kids). I walk through a step by step of how I put these together in my “How to Make Kitty Cat Ears” Blog Post. I was so happy with how this idea turned out, it ended up being a favorite addition to the party.

A favorite place to hang out in the room was the “Kitty Corner”. It also ended up being a great place to bring all the kids together and capture their sugar covered faces and adorable coordinating black and white attire.

We had a blast celebrating and we can not wait for the next styled event, or at least I can’t. I think the boys can do without them, hehe! To see more photos from this party head to the feature on 100 Layer Cakelet.
