I am excited to share this birthday is one of the first that I did everything on my own (with help from the kids, of course). Usually I will have the cake, cupcakes, all the sweet things made by other creatives. This time around I wanted to try my hand at baking. On Sophie’s actual birthday when I asked what she wanted to do she responded with, “Bake with Grammy.” (awwww, heart melt right) Well, that actually opened my eyes to how much Sophie really enjoys baking. She always asks to be involved when I set up parties, so this time she got to! From helping with the simple balloon garland backdrop decor, painting forest trees, helping make the cake and taste testing it too, Sophie got to help!
If you would have asked me a week ago what her party was going to look like, I would have had no idea. I knew I wanted to do a Forest theme. Or should I say, Four-est Theme. Sophie has such a love for exploring and being outside that it fit so perfectly. Everything within the set up was done with the idea to keep it simple. Let’s take a look at some of the woodland forest birthday party decor and DIY’s.

I wanted to add a couple things that I do for each party to save a little money and make the planning process easier.
Party Hacks & Decor Ideas to Save Money
- Sketch out your party set up before you design it in real time.
- Don’t feel like you need SO MUCH STUFF. Just a couple of treats are plenty!
- Save things from previous parties. I have a couple party boxes and can usually reuse a few things every time. This party, the plates, straws, cake topper and forks were all used at previous parties.
- A white cake stand goes a long way.
- Creating something to tape and tie your backdrops onto is amazing. Thank you Goldn Grasses for lending me this one.
- Printables are a hit! Google/ Search Pinterest your theme + free printable and you might be surprised what you will find. Click HERE for the one from this party.

DIY Balloon Garland Backdrop
I did the same method to make this Simple coloured Balloon Garland Backdrop as I did for Evelyn’s birthday party. A few difference are that I used multi-coloured and sizes of balloons. I was a fan of the smaller balloons in this woodland themed backdrop as it allowed me to fill the gaps easier and add smaller pops of colour throughout.

Hand Painted Tree Wall Decals
Hand Painted and cut tree “wall decals” // Sophie painted sheets of paper green and after they dried we cute them out into tree shapes and taped them to the wall behind to look like little tree wall decals.

Woodland Themed Names for Treats
This is something that was a common theme when I was looking up different woodland and forest themed parties for decor. So, not my original idea, but I loved it so much I had to include it. The tree bowls in the front were labeled, Bear Poop, Branches, and Clouds. I wanted to add Wild Berries in there too but opted out due to the though of having berry juice all over my rug.

Triple Layered Naked Cake with Icing Trees
Surprisingly an easy cake to pull off. On my Instagram post on the cake I had friends say it turned out “pinterest worthy” (win!). I made two boxes of a Betty Crocker cake mix and was able to make the three layers plus a dozen cupcakes, not bad right. To create the naked cake look I just applied a slopping amount of icing in between the layers and using the dull edge of a butter knife to smooth it out along the edges. Icing was applied around the top and ended up turning out like little trees.

Free Printable Woodland Forest Scavenger Hunt
I had no idea how this was going to go over with the kids. First of all, there were some kids outside on the trampoline, some playing with toys in the bedroom and some watching a movie. When I announced that we were going to do a scavenger hunt the kids all jumped up from their spots and came to play (minus the oldest who was 9, though my 8 year old joined in!). I shared the game as a free printable for you to download and use, great for a birthday party or really anytime with the kids.
At the end of the day, what is most important is that the kids have fun! That they did! Even though it was on and off raining they were running around inside and outside, eating cake and laughing along the way.
