Business Tips

It was such an honour to speak on the panel at Vancity Business Babes most recent social media and branding event. With my blog and background in graphic design I felt like it was a perfect topic for me to speak on. Sitting on the panel with Erin, Raw Beauty Talks, and Cindy, The Vancouverite blog, was such a pleasure. Each of these ladies brought so much value to the conversation with their unique businesses experiences. There was a lot of information shared, but these 5 social media and branding tips continue to circle my mind after the event.

With social media and branding ever changing and a huge part of every business there are bound to be a lot of different views and opinions. These tips are what I feel are important to every business. Even with the ever changing algorithms and social platforms these tips should always be useful.

5 Social Media and Branding Tips

  1. Create a Mission & Follow That

Does your blog or business have a mission statement? This should be created right from the start. Creating a mission statement and writing it out is so powerful. It is important to focus on the big picture and ensure that every decision you make points towards your mission. It is so easy to get lost in the everyday tasks without one. Have a clear mission, write it out and make it visible to allow you to easily continue to focus on that goal.

  2. Chose Key Topics / Categories

There were a lot of questions around social media content creation. How we get inspired and what types of things to share about were two questions asked. What came to my mind when answering was something I had read from Jenna Kutcher previously. Choosing topics and categories to use for posting about is a great idea. Select somewhere close to 5 topics (for me it is; motherhood, style, kids fashion, parties, travel) and then alternate when you post about each topic. I do not stick to this 100% on my Instagram feed but it is a good guideline for creating new content and deciding what to share next.

  3. Do it Good or Don’t Do it at All

It is impossible to keep up with it all and do a good job. Choose what you can do good and work on that. We chatted about different platforms of social media (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Periscope… ) and how choosing which ones are best for you and your business is a good place to start. You do not have to be on every social media platform as not every platform will benefit your business. Start with one or two, grow those and then consider adding more. I personally feel that it looks better to not have a platform then to have one and not be active on it.

  4. Do What You Do Best & Hire Out the Rest

I can’t remember who said this but I thought that it was so true! We can’t do everything. We also can’t be awesome at everything. There are people out there with the skills to do certain things better then we can do them ourselves. Know where your own talents and areas of expertise are and then hire out the rest. This will save you a lot of time and stress handing over these tasks to someone else who can do the job best!

  5. Stay in Your Lane

This circles back to creating your mission statement. This was said right at the start of the event and stood out to me the rest of your night. It is so easy to be distracted by competition or other small business owners. Focus on your mission statement and stay true to yourself and your brand. When you start going out of your lane and try doing too much or adding things that might not fit, you start to loose site of your end goal. Try not to get distracted with what others are doing around you, save all your energy for your own goals and dreams.
