DO IT YOURSELF

Gifting something from the kids for Father’s Day (or any occasion for that matter) is bound to be a win! Who doesn’t love a little something handmade by their children. These DIY personalized Garden Tools are super easy to make and you can even add on a little mini version for your kids to keep too!

It was such a pleasure to put this together to be featured in print for this June’s Loving Local magazine. You can see the feature in print at any participating pickup locations or order your copy to be delivered. More information on that here.

Keep in mind that if your husband isn’t one known for a green thumb, change up the tool. It would also look so cute on a hammer! Try our any tool and be sure to tag @creativewifeandjoyfulworker and @lovinglocal.ca so we can see! Enjoy and Happy Father’s Day!

Directions:

  • Prep area for painting and sanding
  • Use a fine to medium sandpaper to take off any top coat and clean wooden tool ends
  • Once cleaned, brush off dust and apply your alphabet letters

  • Apply the letters very firmly. Make sure to push out any air bubbles and fill any little ridges or cracks
  • Paint over the letters lightly with thin layers of paint. I started away from the letters after dipping the brush to allow for the least amount of paint on the brush when I hit the letters.
  • Paint 2-3 thin coats using furniture chalk paint. My favourite is Shelter by Spruce Collective.

  • Let dry
  • Use the sharp edge of your scissors to lift the letters off, remove all
  • Once removed fold over your sandpaper to make a point and brush off any paint that may have leaked underneath the letters
  • Tie them together and gift with a plant.
