Business Tips

So here we go mama’s, you are either reading this because you are interested in starting a blog or perhaps you have already started. Either way, you want to know more! Well you are on the right track by reading and researching and I am so happy to take this time to write out these 10 Tips for New Mom Bloggers.

When I first started my blog, I tried to email people. I tried to get help from other bloggers directly and you know what… fail. I never heard back. Now that life has gotten busier with another child and a growing business (yes, this blog is my business) I see why I heard crickets. It takes time to email, so as this life gets busier I have told myself that I want to still be there for others who are starting out, in the same position I was starting out.

I hope that you can gain some wisdom and encouragement from this tips. However, know that in the end, we are all our own people. If you find a way that works for you that isn’t want I suggest, do it! What works best for one does not always work best for all. So if you do have something different or new to add make sure to add that in the comments below.

10 Tips for New Mom Bloggers (could really be any blogger, but some tips are motherhood related)

  1. Just Start

Don’t wait for it to be perfect or for you to “know it all” just start. Starting is honestly the hardest most terrifying part. I remember telling people that I was starting a blog and I was sooo nervous to share (mostly because I didn’t know anyone else that did it), but just doing it feels so good.

  2. Write About What You Are Pasionate About

Be real to who you are. A lot of mamas will write about a wide range of things, you can keep it to one topic or even five +. I read a lot that you need to find your niche before starting and as much as I agree with that, I also feel that if you choose to just be you that is niche enough! We all have something unique to offer, so stay true to your niche will come to you.

  3. Google Everything

The answers are all out there, you just have to look for them. When I started I self taught myself everything through google, starting with how to start a WordPress site. It then lead to googling how to set up my tripod for photos and into lots and lots of social media tips. Use a mixture between google, Pinterest and YouTube and you are bound to find the answer out there. I personally lean on searching the answer before asking others because you can often find the most in depth answers through blog posts similar to this one.

  4. Don’t Start Every Social Media All at Once

Bloggers & Social Media is over whelming and takes up a lot of time. As a mom, we don’t have very much extra time on our hands so make sure you are using it wisely. I started my Facebook (to share posts to family and friends) and Instagram (to start growing + meeting people) at the start. Once I reached my Instagram goal (5 K) then I started my Twitter. I feel like it is so much better looking for a brand to not have a social media account then to have one and leave it there stagnant.

  5. Set Family Time Aside

Disclosure: Still working on this. During the day I have family time with the kids with a lot of my work time at night. I have gotten in a habit of working A LOT at night (because it is the only time I can work). I’ve been reminding myself to tone it back, making sure that I dedicate time to my marriage and my friends because I need that to be solid. A great way to do this is to keep your phone in another room for either X amount of hours a night or X nights of the week to give your sole attention to the people that you are with. I am getting better at this and feel so refreshed on these days. Highly highly recommend this.

  6. Connect with Other Moms

Start following other mom bloggers and interacting on their feeds. You guys, guess what, people you meet online are awesome! haha! Disclosure: I was terrified to meet my first online friend. Well, haven’t I been pleasantly surprised! One of the BEST things that have come from starting to blog is the connections that I have made. I have been so encouraged and uplifted by so many other mamas in the small business world.

  7. Go To Networking Events

If you are from Vancouver (Fraser Valley) there are a number of different groups that you can attend events like this. The first one I attended was one of Danielle’s Vancity Business Babes events. I have since been a part of three of her events and have been able to meet and connect with so many talented and like minded people. Getting off the computer and connecting with others in real life is the most refreshing thing. I always leave these events so inspired and encouraged.

  8. Focus on Photography

Blogging and social media is very visual. Photography doesn’t have to be something that is perfect from the get go (remember, just start).  However, it is something that you want to be working on. I find that a lot of people find their way onto my site and social media platforms because of my images. Viewers tend to see something that they are attracted to and then start reading. Don’t stress out about it too much though, the longer you are blogging, the more you will find your style and see what works best for you.

  9. Offer Something From Your Readers

Often when I write a post I am always thinking, what is the reader going to take away from this. As a blogger we grow as our site traffic and social media grows. You want to create a reason why a reader will come to your site on the day your post goes live, but also you want them to share it with their friends. This could be from teaching your readers something, sharing something personal, offering something of value (think printables or giveaways), and more.

  10. It Takes A LOT OF WORK

If you didn’t know this already, starting a blog takes a lot of work. It takes a lot of time. It takes a lot of patience. It takes a lot of research.

    buttttt……

It is totally worth it! If you feel like it is something you are wanting to do, be kind on yourself and know that everything takes time. You are not going to know everything over night and just do what you can when you can. Have fun doing it, make friends and give back where you can.

I’ve had a blog for years but like you said, I was somewhat scared to talk about it or tell others about it. I recently made a commitment to “just start” and it’s not as scary as I thought. I also think you’re right about it not necessarily be about finding a niche but being myself. Thanks for sharing these helpful tips, Codi.
